World of Warcraft high ping: realms, layers and the parts you control
An MMO adds a variable most shooters do not have: your character lives on a specific realm in a specific data centre. Your ping can be excellent one evening and poor the next without anything changing on your side.
Find out where your realm actually is
Realm location determines your floor. Two characters on different realms can have ping that differs by a factor of three on the same connection. Before optimising anything, confirm which data centre your main realm uses and compare it with a test character elsewhere.
Then check the local half
- Wired connection and 5 GHz Wi-Fi only.
- Addon-related stalls are not network problems — but they feel identical, and they are free to rule out by testing with addons disabled.
- Background uploads: patching, cloud sync and streams.
- QoS/SQM on the router for raid nights, when the house is busiest.
Raids amplify everything
A connection that feels fine while questing can fall apart in a 20-player raid, because twenty clients means far more packets and far less tolerance for loss. If the problem only appears in raids, the fix is local stability — not a new route.
