Apex Legends high ping: region choice beats almost everything else

Apex Legends is unusual: the data-centre selector hands you a natural experiment. If your connection behaves differently in two data centres, you learn something real about your network — and it costs nothing to try.

Run the experiment

Note the ping to your three nearest data centres over a few minutes each, then play one match in the second-best. If the ping tracks the distance between data centres, your connection is healthy and the region is the variable. If it is unstable in every data centre, the problem is at your end.

The usual local issues

  • Wi-Fi retransmission and 2.4 GHz interference.
  • Uplink saturation from backups, streams or someone else on the network.
  • A router without queue management, which turns any busy moment into a lag spike.
  • Double NAT from a modem that is not in bridge mode.

Where a routing tool fits — and does not

A route optimiser is worth testing when one specific data centre is consistently worse than the others at the same distance: that pattern suggests a peering problem on that path. It is not worth paying for if the numbers rise evenly with distance, or if the instability is present everywhere.
